Dual SIM devices are fast becoming part of the mainstream world. With high demand for good mobile packages, these types of devices offer the opportunity to get the best of both worlds.

If you want different numbers for personal and business use, then considering a dual SIM device isn’t such a bad idea. This will essentially save you from having to buy and carry two different cellphones.

And if that wasn’t convincing enough, then imagine the opportunity of combining two different data plans, and a package that offers good voice minute rates. The benefit is that you can use two network providers simultaneously and your phone is not locked to one specific network, which in turn means you get more mobile coverage.

There are three types of dual SIM devices

Dual SIM Single Standby (Passive)

While this type of technology is capable of using two different SIM cards, the biggest downside of it is that only one SIM card can be active at a time. This means that when one SIM card works, the other is unusable.

Dual SIM Dual Active

This implementation allows you to make phone calls from both SIM cards inside your smartphone. It can also receive calls on either of the two SIM cards, at the same time. Dual SIM Dual Active smartphones have both their SIM cards permanently active. When you are having a conversation on one of them, the other still works and receives calls, messages and data.

Dual SIM Dual Standby

This is a hybrid of Dual SIM Standby and Dual SIM Dual Active. This type of Dual SIM technology allows your smartphone to have two active SIM cards, and they both use only one radio transceiver. So what does this mean? Well, as long as the SIM cards are both in Standby mode, you can make and receive calls on any of them. However, once you take a call on one SIM card, the other becomes inactive until the first card is no longer actively used. That is true if one or both of the mobile networks you are connected to, use 2G for phone calls. If your mobile network(s) are 3G or 4G and do not use 2G for voice calls, this limitation does not exist.
