How much cheaper are Whatsapp calls compared to Airtime?

It is very tempting to assume WhatsApp calls are taxing on your data. The truth is WhatsApp calls will cost you close to nothing.  An average WhatsApp call uses anything from 0.15mb to about 0.5mb per minute, according to a Quora forum finding.

The introduction of WhatsApp has presented a popular alternative to using your airtime giving us the opportunity to save on costs. This means that making a three-minute call over WhatsApp instead of regular cellphone call can save you as much as R3, according to a report by Business Insider.

How can WhatsApp make calls more cost-effective?

WhatsApp makes use of the internet to make and receive voice calls. This means it relies on low latency delivery and deploys VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).

How much are you being charged?

Air Mobile data 1GB Cost per 1mb MTN call per min(first 3 mins) Whatsapp cost for a (3 mins call) 3 Min Voice 3 min Whatsapp Voice

Advantages of making WhatsApp calls:

  1. International calls are much easier: If the person you want to call is online on WhatsApp, geographical locations are irrelevant, and you’ll be charged less.
  2. Supports HD calls: WhatsApp calls use the internet and not your carrier’s network infrastructure. Therefore, if your carrier does not support HD calls yet, WhatsApp calls are the way to go.
  3. WhatsApp is popular: With smartphones getting more popular, chances are a huge chunk of your contacts are already on WhatsApp. This essentially means you can call as many contacts as you have on your phone via WhatsApp.
  4. Privacy: This is the most important advantage of WhatsApp. WhatApp’s privacy policy makes your data and communication highly secure. Due to this, no one can eavesdrop on your calls.

Disadvantages of WhatsApp calls:

  1. Unprofessional: While WhatsApp calls are a convenient means to keep in touch with your family and friends, it isn’t necessarily appropriate to use in professional situations.
  2. Poor Connectivity: Sometimes your connection to the internet may be poor and this will affect your call quality.
  3. You need a smartphone: You need a smartphone to make a WhatsApp call. Sometimes this can be very expensive.
  4. Technology is still developing: Unlike normal voice calls, the WhatsApp voice call technology is still a relatively new form of technology. This means normal calls are a lot more reliable than Internet calls such as those from WhatsApp.

Whether it be for privacy reasons or the popularity of the app, it all boils down to preference. Tell us in the comment section below whether your prefer voice calls or WhatsApp calls!
