Blue Ocean Virtual Reality Centre making waves!

The Afrihost Social Media Team was treated to an awesome afternoon at the Blue Ocean Virtual Reality Experience Center in Bedfordview.

We received a very warm welcome at the Blue Ocean offices. We started off with a short safety briefing before we jumped into our first Virtual Reality session. Suvesh was the first to try out Raw Data, the Tron-inspired first person shooter had Suvesh fending off wave after wave of robots. The slick graphics and frenetic action was the perfect introduction to the HTC Vive VR system.

The HTC Vive is a room-scale VR System with over 70 sensors tracking hand and body motion giving the user a more natural and fluid experience in the VR environment. The Vive headset combines two 1080 x 1200 pixel screens with a high 90 Hz refresh rate to give the most immersive experience possible. The two motion tracked handheld controllers gives the user the ability to quickly and instinctively interact with the environment.

The educational opportunities are just as mind-blowing! We were presented with a demo of the Apollo 11 mission in full VR! The system is also able to explore exotic and distant locations using Google Earth.

Next, Vaughan got to experiment with Tilt Brush. This app turns the Vive into a 3D illustration tool, a literal virtual canvas. Within seconds Vaughan was using light to create intricate sculptures that he could walk around and alter in a magnitude of different ways.

No VR experience would be complete without the gut-wrenchingly horrifying Brookhaven Experiment! Dwayne and Noma tried the zombie horror-survivor and their 10-minute sessions were filled with girly screams as zombies swarmed them from all sides. Their weapon’s ammunition supplies seemed to be constantly running empty as they fended off the hordes, ambushing them time after time.

We would like to thank Eric and the Blue Ocean Team for giving us our first taste of the amazing HTC Vive VR system! It was an eye-opener for us to feel what the Vive can offer. I can totally recommend that you try it out for yourself!
